Timothy Earl Behrend. Lahir 17 Maret 1954, di Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Memperoleh gelar BA di bidang filsafat pada Brigham Young University, Utah USA (1979); M.A di bidang Sejarah Asia Tenggara pada University of Wisconsin, Madison (1983); dan Ph.D. di Fakultas Studi Asia, The Australian National University (1988) dengan disertasinya "The Serat Jatiswara. 'Structure an Change in Javanese Poem, 1600-1930." Ia menguasai lebih dari sepuluh bahasa di dunia, antara lain: bahasa Indonesia, Malaysia, Jawa, Prancis, Belanda, Jerman, Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, dan Jawa Kuno. Saat ini ia bekerja sebagai dosen senior pada School of Asia Studies, Universitas Auckland New Zealand. Ia pernah menjadi konsultan pada Ford Foundation untuk Penyusunan mikrofilm dan pengembangan perpustakaan, pada Perpustakaan Nasional Indonesia, bekerjasama dengan Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Indonesia (1989-1993). Karya-karyanya, antara lain: Katalog Induk Naskah-naskah Nusantara Jilid IV, Perpustakaan Nasional RI.; Serat Jatiswara: Struktur dan Perubahan di dalam Puisi Jawa 1600-1930.
