 Our challenge switched to propeller planes after my husband and that i brainstormed ideas for an upcoming picnic for our native gifted group. I steered a paper airplane contest as an exercise, and my husband thought that it isn't difficult sufficient. He thought that it would be extra fun not simply to construct a paper aircraft but to make a paper airplane with a propeller. Being an engineer, he immediately started tinkering to try out this idea. Making a propeller is tremendous straightforward. Basically you insert a rubber band into a loop of a paper clip and thread it with a wire through a straw. Then you definately clip it with another paper clip on the alternative aspect of the straw and bend a paper clip, so it has a sharp tip for a propeller itself. We tried two kinds of propellers - one cut out of a plastic paper cup and another made out of versatile wire and Scotch tape.
You then attach your propeller to the center of your airplane and you're ready to fly your airplane. A propeller made out of plastic cup was too massive and the aircraft kept falling on its nostril. Even balancing the back with paper clips didn't add a lot with stability. And falling on its nose time and again destroyed plastic straw fairly quckly. A propeller made out of wire and Scotch tape was lighter and the plane balanced higher and flew fairly properly without propeller working. But with propeller working, it tended to wobble and fall fairly shortly. We didn't quit on a propeller-powered paper airplane but we had an unusually rainy weather currently and not a whole lot of time to continue tinkering with totally different propeller sizes. Perhaps it is a superb project for a gifted group picnic - maybe one of many more mechanically inclined kiddos will make it work. What are your children engineering proper now?
